A necessidade do fortalecimento do conhecimento humanístico na formação do médico-veterinário: a visão de estudantes do segundo semestre de graduação MV&Z
Tavolaro, Paula.

A new alkalophilic isolate of Bacillus as a producer of cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase using cassava flour BJM
Coelho,Sheila Lorena de Araújo; Magalhães,Valter Cruz; Marbach,Phellippe Arthur Santos; Cazetta,Marcia Luciana.
Abstract Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) catalyzes the conversion of starch into non-reducing cyclic sugars, cyclodextrins, which have several industrial applications. This study aimed to establish optimal culture conditions for β-CGTase production by Bacillus sp. SM-02, isolated from soil of cassava industries waste water lake. The optimization was performed by Central Composite Design (CCD) 2, using cassava flour and corn steep liquor as substrates. The maximum production of 1087.9 U mL−1 was obtained with 25.0 g L−1 of cassava flour and 3.5 g L−1 of corn steep after 72 h by submerged fermentation. The enzyme showed optimum activity at pH 5.0 and temperature 55 °C, and maintained thermal stability at 55 °C for 3 h. The enzymatic activity was...

A new analysis of hypoxia tolerance in fishes using a database of critical oxygen level (P-crit) ArchiMer
Rogers, Nicholas J.; Urbinalt, Mauricio A.; Reardon, Erin E.; Mckenzie, David J.; Wilsonl, Rod W..
Hypoxia is a common occurrence in aquatic habitats, and it is becoming an increasingly frequent and widespread environmental perturbation, primarily as the result of anthropogenic nutrient enrichment and climate change. An in-depth understanding of the hypoxia tolerance of fishes, and how this varies among individuals and species, is required to make accurate predictions of future ecological impacts and to provide better information for conservation and fisheries management. The critical oxygen level (P-crit)m has been widely used as a quantifiable trait of hypoxia tolerance. It is defined as the oxygen level below which the animal can no longer maintain a stable rate of oxygen uptake (oxyregulate) and uptake becomes dependent on ambient oxygen...

A new approach to determine the distributional effects of quota management in fisheries ArchiMer
Bellanger, Manuel; Macher, Claire; Guyader, Olivier.
Quota allocation mechanisms have distributional effects that are highly relevant to the economic organization of fisheries. In France, where fishing allocations are non-transferable, quotas are shared among Producer Organizations (POs) based on the historical landings of their members. Each PO is then responsible for implementing their own internal rules that provide individual or collective allocations to their members. This study investigates the distributional effects of the various quota management systems adopted by POs on quotas and production for the Bay of Biscay sole fishery. A comparison between initial allocations by vessel based on historical landings and actual observed landings is presented. Inequality metrics are used to quantify...

We present a mapped climatology (GLODAPv2.2016b) of ocean biogeochemical variables based on the new GLODAP version 2 data product (Olsen et al., 2016; Key et al., 2015), which covers all ocean basins over the years 1972 to 2013. The quality- controlled and internally consistent GLODAPv2 was used to create global 1 degrees x 1 degrees mapped climatologies of salinity, temperature, oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, total dissolved inorganic carbon (TCO2), total alkalinity (TAlk), pH, and CaCO3 saturation states using the DataInterpolating Variational Analysis (DIVA) mapping method. Improving on maps based on an earlier but similar dataset, GLODAPv1.1, this climatology also covers the Arctic Ocean. Climatologies were created for 33 standard depth...

A new Mammutidae (Proboscidea, Mammalia) from the Late Miocene of Gansu Province, China Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOTHÉ,DIMILA; AVILLA,LEONARDO S.; ZHAO,DESI; XIE,GUANGPU; SUN,BOYANG.
ABSTRACT The "Yanghecun specimen", a proboscidean specimen represented by a mandible from Miocene of China and previously described as Gomphotheriidae, is here reviewed and described as a new genus and species of Mammutidae: Sinomammut tobieni. This taxon is a longirostrine mastodon, lacking lower tusks, and bearing a wide last molar with oblique and non-inflated lophids, broad transverse interlophids, and yoke-like wear figures. Phylogenetic analysis of Mammutidae based on dental and mandibular features recovered S. tobieni as sister group of the mastodon Mammut. The longirostrine condition and the well-developed lower incisors seem to be primitive for Mammutidae, while the brevirostry is the derived condition, probably emerged during the middle Miocene...

A new perspective on West African hydroclimate during the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Parker, Andrew O.; Schmidt, Matthew W.; Jobe, Zane R.; Slowey, Niall C..
Widespread drought characterized the Heinrich 1 and Younger Dryas cold periods of the last deglaciation throughout much of Africa, causing large increases in dust emissions from the Sahara and Sahel. At the same time, increases in wind strength may have also contributed to dust flux, making it difficult to interpret dust records alone as reflecting changes in rainfall over the region. The Niger River has the third largest drainage basin in Africa and drains most of the Sahara and Sahel and thus preserves and propagates climatic signals. Here, we present new reconstructions of Niger Delta sea surface salinity and Niger River discharge for the last 20,000 years in order to more accurately reconstruct the onset of the Western African Monsoon system. Based on...

A new Silver Dollar species of Metynnis Cope, 1878 (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) from Northwestern Brazil and Southern Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology
Ota,Rafaela Priscila; Py-Daniel,Lúcia Helena Rapp; Jégu,Michel.
ABSTRACT A new Metynnis is described from the rio Negro in Brazil and Venezuela, and from black- or clearwater tributaries in Brazil including the rios Parauari, Uatumã, Trombetas, and Sucunduri (the latter belonging to the rio Madeira basin). The new species can be distinguished readily from all congeners by having a high concentration of dark chromatophores on the lateral line scales. It can be further distinguished by the combination of head length 24.3-27.5% of SL, 13-18 gill-rakers on upper limb and 16-24 gill-rakers on lower limb. The new species is most similar to and likely most closely related to Metynnis hypsauchen . These two species share a similar color pattern, body shape and sexual dimorphism of the anal fin. However, they differ in that M....

A new species, new synonymy, and notes on Paravelia Breddin (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Veliidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rodrigues,Higor D.D.; Moreira,Felipe F.F..
ABSTRACT The broad-shouldered water strider Paravelia cunhai sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on material from the state of Pará, northern Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all other species in this genus mainly by the dark color of the head and pronotum, absence of pruinosity or silvery pubescence on the anterior lobe of pronotum, maculae pattern on the fore wings, hind femur with row of 22 spines on mesal margin, and general shape of the paramere. This new species was collected in a pool inside a cave without incident light, a habitat recorded for the genus only recently, which reinforces the hypothesis that some species of Paravelia have troglophilic habits. In addition, a photograph of the dorsal habitus and notes concerning...
